Current Research

Professor Xu’s research focuses mainly on the development of micro-electro-mechanical systems, popularly known as MEMS. MEMS technology is the integration of sensors, actuators, together with electronics on a single silicon or other substrate to enable a dramatic improvement in system performance. MEMS technology impacts nearly every product category by bringing together silicon-based microelectronics with micromachining technology, making possible the realization of complete systems-on-a-chip.

Microelectronic integrated circuits can be thought of as the “brains” of a system and MEMS enhance its capability with “eyes”, “noses”, “ears” and “arms”, to allow microsystems to “see”, “smell”, “hear” and control the environment. Sensors gather information through measuring mechanical, thermal, biological, chemical, optical, and magnetic parameters. The electronics then process the information derived from the sensors and through some decision making capability direct the actuators to respond by moving, positioning, regulating, pumping, and filtering, thereby controlling the environment for some desired outcome or purpose.
